Capacitor Discharge Stud Welding: The Process

CD stud welding is extremely efficient method of welding thin, small fasteners to metals, such as mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and titanium. A series of powerful capacitors store energy at a particular voltage, which is determined by the size and type of material of the stud. When the trigger is pulled, the energy is discharged through the fastener and onto the specific piece of the work metal. A special ignition tip on the base of the stud helps create an arc which melts both the tip of the stud and the adjoining surface on the work piece.

A spring shoves the stud unto the molten surface instantaneously. When the molten material solidifies, all that is left is a strong permanent bond. The most fascinating part is that this entire process only takes about 4 milliseconds! Our systems can be automated to increase productivity and efficiency.
